How to Kick a Rut

We all go through ups and downs in life, and times when we’re feeling extremely unmotivated. Over the past few months I was in such a big rut and I was letting my wellness slip. In the past I was really big into leading a healthy lifestyle by eating properly, exercising, and being inspired by others promoting health and wellness. Slowly it all seemed to spiral out of control, and I lost all motivation to keep at it. The less I exercised, the more I didn’t care what I was putting into my body and the cycle continued.

It wasn’t until just recently that I realized I needed to make a serious change in my life. I couldn’t let stress, anxiety, and my newfound unhealthy habits take over my life. This isn’t something you can just snap your fingers to make disappear, but a process that starts with a decision. Here are my five tips for getting out of a rut and getting your life back on track.

5 Tips for Kicking Your Rut in the Butt

1. Find a why?

So, you’re in a rut? Well, the first step to getting out of your slump is accepting the fact that you’re in one in the first place. From there the best thing to do is figure out why? Why have you been down? Why have you been unmotivated? Make a list of things that have been bothering you, and making you feel the way you do. For me personally, it was because I let my stress and anxiety take over, and my love for leading a healthy lifestyle go.

2. Want It

The second step to ditching your slump is opening your mind up for change. No one is going to make your life better for you, so you really need to want it for yourself and be ready to work at it. Essentially this is the hardest step to get through, because you really need to be ready and you really need to want it. Countless times I would tell myself I would start eating healthy again on Monday, but when Monday rolled around I would keep pushing it. Weeks turned into months, and I finally got to the point where I knew something had to give. There’s no magic pill you take that will snap you back into reality, but there is the power of your mindset. There’s no better time than now to improve your life; you’re really only one decision away.

3. Find Inspiration

Surrounding yourself with things that inspire you is one of the best things that you can do. In order to keep a positive mind you need to cut all the crap that’s holding you down. Spend more time unplugged, go for walks, get some new workout gear, hangout with positive friends, or indulge in a hobby that really makes you happy. I personally love reading inspiring blogs, or following along social accounts of those who I find to be inspirational. Basically people who make me want to get my butt in gear and change my life for the better.

4. Stay motivated

Now that you’ve made up your mind, and found your inspiration it’s time to get motivated and stay motivated. When I get back into working out one of the things that motivates me to hit the gym is cute workout clothes. I know that sounds so lame, but the saying of when you look good you feel good is very true. If treating yourself to a new workout top every month or so is going to keep you going then you might as well treat yourself. Every time you feel your motivation starting to slip remember to revisit those things that inspire you, and refocus on your goals and what you’re trying to achieve.

5. Set realistic goals

Set monthly goals, and don’t go too crazy or you’ll just set yourself up for failure. All good things take time, and nothing worth having happens over night. This is all about baby steps, and every small step forward is progress. Say you want to run a 5 kilometre race in 4 months, well then don’t start by trying to run a 5k if you’re out of shape because that will just be a disappointment. Instead start with 1 kilometre, and take walking breaks as you need. Once you’ve mastered that, then move up to 2 kilometres — see where I’m going here? Taking baby steps with make you feel accomplished and keep pushing you to be better whereas aiming too high will lead to disappointment and possibly wanting to give up.

There’s no better feeling than being healthy and happy.
