Finding Your Passion

Finding Your Passion

So you’re at a point in your life where you are ready to drill down and find an amazing career that you love. The only problem is you have no idea what the heck you want to do or what you even like to do for that matter. How can you shoot if you don’t even know where you’re aiming? So, how do you find your passion — or better yet, what you actually enjoy doing?

Get Going

Get going? Huh!? How can you get going if you don’t know where you want to be? The funny thing is if you keep living your life without changing a thing and never trying anything new, then your life is going to stay the exact same.

Have you always thought you might like art? Then try an art class. If you hate it then hey, that’s one thing to cross of your list of directions not to go in. I mentioned in a previous post — How I Ended Up With a Career in Marketing — that I aimlessly took an art class in high school to avoid a teacher a didn’t like, and that one small decision ended up shaping my whole future. You see, if I never took that class I would have never known that I even liked art, or that I was good at it.

Stepping Stones

Alright, so now that we’re trying new things and stepping out of our comfort zones a tad that’s when things really start to shape up. Every thing you do and every person you meet has the potential to sway your entire future. Scary right? When you think back on your life so far, where you are today is because of small decisions that you’ve made that have led you to this point.

I went to school for Graphic Design and not even a year out of school my career has already changed. My life went from the art class, to design school, to a public sector government job, to a friend recommending I apply at an agency, to working in digital marketing.

Each one of those steps in my life somehow led me to the next one. This is coming from someone who literally had no idea what direction to go in, but each new opportunity I took helped me gain a little more clarity. The reason I kept taking more and more steps is because I knew in certain moments that this wasn’t it. That’s the thing with almost anything in life, you just know when it feels right.

Don’t Stress It

Some people’s journeys are quicker than others, so it’s important to never compare your path to someone else’s or expect that yours will go exactly how theirs panned out. Is every moment in your journey going to be an enjoyable dream job? Definitely not, but you need to go through that to understand what you like and what you don’t like. Remember, it’s all stepping-stones leading you in the right direction.

The minute I feel like I’m not learning or growing my skills is the minute I feel like I need a new challenge ( whether it be at work or elsewhere ). I totally understand that not everyone feels the same way and there’s work to live people and live to work people. I would consider myself a live to work person, which is why I’m always hunting for new challenges.

I know it all seems easier said than done, but once you start making those small decisions in your life they’ll start to add up. Welcome new opportunity and you’ll be surprised where you end up.

Thanks Binta! It sucks there’s no magic formula lol but everyone has a different journey and experience so don’t get discouraged because you never know when everything will start to fall into place. 🙂

Thank you! It’s definitely a lot of trial and error in figuring things out. I think for me the biggest realization was that there is no timeline for figuring your sh*t out – everyone is different so there’s no use in comparison!
